Each pulls in a different direction. The pink bright and almost green. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red dark, jammy, nearly overripe. And between them this vintage accord that smells as\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eif someone had left the rose in a cupboard too long - powdery, dusty, warm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou shouldn't force this together. We did it anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome things you don't build alone. This one carries two names, and it wears both. There's \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ea kind of understanding you only reach with someone who works the same way you do - \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ewho knows what it costs to open a bottle you can't refill, and reaches for it anyway. Alp and\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI don't have to agree on every note to agree on the thing itself. Brotherhood is trusting \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ewhere the other one is going.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Opening:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst the English spearmint. Cool, clear, almost impudent. Then it tips into the Sichuan \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003epepper from China. That tingling, numbing prickle that leaves the tongue dead, except \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ehere it hits the nose. Italian citrus fruits tear the thing open, give it light. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd everything turns serious with what lies beneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pallida orris accord settles powdery under the flowers. Bourbon geranium pushes its \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003egreen, metallic sharpness in between and keeps the roses from turning sweet. It's a \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ebalance that could tip at any moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen the floor opens and reveals what was obvious all along.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBengalese Sylhet Oud, deep and animalic intertwined with Ethiopian civet. Somalian \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eincense wrapping the roses in smoke. Beneath it hyraceum, castoreum, onycha, \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eopoponax. The old, animalic things you normally use only in the smallest amounts, \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ebecause otherwise they empty the room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe didn't ration them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhy It Works:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThree roses that contradict one another. An oud that ought to dominate. Animalics that \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eought to drive people away. By every rule we know, this shouldn't hold together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut that's exactly the point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mint keeps the sweetness in check. The pepper keeps the roses awake. The \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eanimalics pull everything down into the warmth, and the roses keep pulling themselves \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eback out. Sometimes powdery, sometimes jammy, sometimes so deep in the animalic dust\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ethat you catch them for only a second.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDivide and conquer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is when nothing is allowed to gain the upper hand anymore, you find out what \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eremains when no one wins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwo names.
